Childhood memories are vivid, almost indescribable in their detail, and impossible to forget. A Christmas memory I have is that of a black velvet dress  a family friend gave to me for my seventh Christmas.

Wanted: LatinaSmart Ambassadors

You: Smart, Funny, Interesting, Connected, Con un poco de Chispa and a Big Corazon.

Me: Looking for you — that would be 5 of you — to join me as a LatinaSmart Ambassador.

Why: To expand the conversation of what it means to be a Latina today — a woman connected to her roots and grabbing on to all the possibilities offered in modern American life.

And most importantly, LatinaSmart ambassadors will help judge $25,000 in scholarships to young Latinas awarded during Hispanic Heritage Month by Kmart’s Latina Smart Fund.

Como?

  • Write a short, catchy, and oh-so-true LatinaSmart-worthy quote like the ones posted here and add it to the LatinaSmart Facebook community. Start with “I am LatinaSmart because _________” or come up with your own slogan, saying, dicho alo what you see here.
  • Hang out over at the Facebook community and offer up answers to questions the community manager asks. It will help us all get to know you better to make the final selection.
  • Tweet your genius quote using the #LatinaSmart tag.

Note: Ambassadors will be compensated for participation, but those details will come from Kmart directly to those selected. An announcement will be made the week of Sept. 5.

Twitteando LatinaSmart

If you don’t have a Twitter account, this may be good reason to start. A big groupito is going to converge on Twitter at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST Wednesday, Aug. 24 to talk cosas fun, interestante y smart. There also will be some freebies given away, too.

Who will be there: The fashionable Mercedes from Be Chic Mag; the glitter-loving Kathy from Crafy Chica; Cuban-American food writer y fashionista Bren from Flanboyant Eats; the talented and connected Monique from Blogs by Latinas y Yo representing Latinas in Tennessee! (Kinda kidding)

To follow the conversation, search for #LatinaSmart and if you are new to Twitter, here is a basic tutorial. Seriously, it will be pretty fun. Twitter parties are like a cocktail party you don’t have to wear tacones to!

And if you think you can’t handle Twitter, check out my Latinos, The Original ReTweeters video.

El Porque

I love this campaign because it is one more way to defeat the Chiquita Banana, Chola, Chusma, hot Mamacita, Maid stereotype that permeates our culture. We are many, many more things than the little box our culture gets put into. Some of it out of malice, but mostly out of unknowing (I don’t want to say “ignorance.”)

Part of the motivation for creating the Tiki Tiki was this very desire to show the many aspects of growing up, and living Latino, in the United States — that our experiences are varied and rich, that our culture is both ancient and new, that our people are a rainbow.

So, here is your chance to create a slogan, a dicho, a saying that tells the world que cool it is to be Latina.

Suerte!

And please share this page with all the smart, talented, fabulous, funny Latinas in your life. Give them the chance to come up with fabulousness too!

Disclosure: I am a paid team member of LatinaSmart, a campaign sponsored by Kmart.
