Black Velvet

Childhood memories are vivid, almost indescribable in their detail, and impossible to forget. A Christmas memory I have is that of a black velvet dress  a family friend gave to me for my seventh Christmas.
The …

Bloom Where You Are Planted

Flower in my sidewalk by akeg on Flickr

“Bloom where you are planted”

A flower, blooming in what looks to be an impossible place — a crack in a sidewalk — is a pretty good metaphor for us to ponder during this season of blooms and new gardens — especially those of us who rail against the here and now, or who look only to what may be coming tomorrow.

What about today?

Are you complaining, whining, fighting?

Or, are you blooming, grateful, joyful?

When people see you coming, do they think “Ay, mi madre.” Or, do they ask you to sit right there next to them?

Be the flower. Not the crack.

And so, a little inspiration from a couple of songs,  contemporary blues and old, American gospel.

First, the fabulous Keb’ Mo’, Let Your Light Shine.

Partial lyrics:

It’s a short ride
Down the long road.
When the rains come
And the winds blow
Let your light shine
Wherever you go.

This world is ready and waiting
For you to break on through.
It’s time to recognize,
To realize,
You’re the only one like you.

Step on up,
Step into your greatness.
Don’t be afraid.
There’s a place where you will rise up to;
No one else could do what you do.
Get out of the way

You can hear the whole song in this video:

Brighten the Corner Where You Are
by Ina Duley Ogdon

Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do.
Do not wait to shed your light afar.
To the many duties ever near you now be true;
Brighten the corner where you are.

Chorus:
Brighten the corner where you are!
Brighten the corner where you are!
Someone far from harbor you may guide across the bar;
Brighten the corner where you are!

Just above are clouded skies that you may help to clear;
Let not narrow self your way debar.
Though into one heart alone may fall your song of cheer,
Brighten the corner where you are.

Here for all your talent you may surely find a need,
Here reflect the Bright and Morning Star.
Ever from your humble hand the bread of life may feed;
Brighten the corner where you are.

Vive hoy, gente.

Hoy.
