So this is Mexico’s equivalent of Cuba’s Santeria (a fusion of European Catholicism and African tribal religions)? Except in Mexico there is no fusion, since this tradion is fully Aztec-Indian in origin and the Spaniards of Mexico are just playing along. As with the case in Cuba the scale of participation is enormously disparate with el Dia de Los Muertos. Since full fledged Santeria is practiced by few white Spaniard-Cubans. It seems that this tradition really unified, if at least for a day or two, Spaniard-Mexicans and Indian-Mexicans and continues to do so.
