Childhood memories are vivid, almost indescribable in their detail, and impossible to forget. A Christmas memory I have is that of a black velvet dress  a family friend gave to me for my seventh Christmas.

Favorite Spanish Palabras

Submitted by on June 17, 2011 – 6:51 am43 Comments

I had to determine this week what my favorite Spanish word is. The yellow pad on my desk is full. From soñar to dulce to cuento to cultura to merengue, I had a hard time making the final choice.

But, it came down to Abrazo.

Abrazo: Hug. That delicious and comforting squeeze we Latinos give so freely — whether it be to loved ones, to lovers or strangers we’ve just met.

Abrazo is my favorite Spanish word.

Why am I sharing this?

Tomorrow is the annual El Día E, a celebración created by the Spain-based Instituto Cervantes to promote and honor el idioma across five continents. They have a wonderful collection of video interviews with Spanish-speaking celebrities and artists such as Alicia Alonso, Shakira and Antonio Banderas.

Not to be outdone, a large group of Latina bloggers got together to post their own words today. We were motivated by Carla and inspired by Tracy, a regular Tiki Tiki contributor who hosts Spanish Fridays on her site, Latina-ish.

So, if you click the links below, you will be served up a fabulous collection of palabras lindas.

And, I hope you will share your own favorite Spanish word with us here today.

Check out the Instituto’s YouTube page for interviews and hang out on their Facebook.
