I Know Love…is Sleepless
Editor’s note: This week on the Tiki Tiki, in honor of Valentine’s Day, five writers finish this sentence “I know love…” Check in for their beautiful, inspiring essays.
I know love is lack of sleep. I don’t think I’ve had eight hours of straight sleep since my son was born. He’s 5. And I’m pretty tired.
But there always are clothes to be washed, food to be cooked or something to be cleaned. Just when I think I’m finished doing one thing, there is always another task. Waiting. The to-do list never ends. There always is a teacher to call, an errand to run, a bill to pay, a play date to schedule and homework to help with.
And when my son gets sick? Ayúdame Dios! I am up all night, checking temperatures, applying cold compresses, changing sick sheets. In the evening, yawning my way through his favorite books. During the day, making a homemade sopita that would make my mother proud.
So while I long for eight hours of sleep, I’d settle for six. Though most nights I get between four and five.
I don’t really mind.
Love keeps me going.
