Childhood memories are vivid, almost indescribable in their detail, and impossible to forget. A Christmas memory I have is that of a black velvet dress  a family friend gave to me for my seventh Christmas.

Pitbull y Yo – A Surreal Story and a Giveaway

Submitted by on September 20, 2010 – 12:32 am35 Comments

As you know, I’m a SAHM (Stay-at-home-mom). I may also be the World’s Oldest Living Blogger, but that’s not important right now.

Last week I had the opportunity to meet a young Cuban recording artist: The very talented, very handsome, very Cuban (!) rapper, Pitbull. (I know. Shut up.)

My daughter, Amy Kikita and I were invited to an event at the Victoria’s Secret store at the uber-hip Grove in Los Angeles.

Click on the headline to watch the video as I tell the story of how I, Marta, the World’s-Oldest-Living-Stay-at-Home-Cuban-Blogging-Mom got to meet this Beautiful-Cuban-What-Beautiful-Eyes-You-Have-Muñecon.

Marta and Kikita with rapper, Pitbull

And because I’m still a little light-headed and reckless from this very cool encounter, let’s do a giveaway!

[9/20/2010 - Just added: I now have TWO bottles to give away! Tell me your stories for a chance to win!]   I have a bottle (1.7 fl. oz) of Victoria’s Secret’s newest fragrance, Bombshell. It’s made with purple passion fruit, Shangri-la peony, and vanilla orchid. I’m not really sure what those are, but I fell in love with the fresh floral and citrus scent. It’s young and it’s sexy and I like it.

One of these two is the Bombshell. ;-)

To enter the drawing for the fragrance, please leave a comment on this post and answer either one or both of these questions:

  • What was the very first perfume you remember wearing?
  • What type of music do you most often listen to?

I’ll choose a winner on Thursday, September 23rd at 11 am Pacific Time. Buena suerte!

For me, it was Heaven Scent by Helena Rubenstein. And the music? Salsa, always salsa.

But right now, I am loving this Bombshell so much so that it may just become my new signature fragrance. From now on, when you hear the word, Bombshell, I want you to think of me.

Here’s a visual….

Many, many thanks to the fabulous Susan Stipcianos of the Dream Team Agency for making this great story happen. You are my hero!

Share, por favor!

Marta you rock! I think Pitbull was one lucky man that day!;-) Love the story and he is definitely worth running through a mall in high heels for. I’ll share a quick story of my own. My sister in law saw Pitbull at Sea World in Miami this summer and managed to get a very cozy picture with him as well. She did this by helping Pit’s adorable little boy get down off of a slide in the playground area. You know how little kids sometimes enthusiastically climb up a slide and when they get to the top they look down and go, “Whoaa, I am NOT sliding down this thing, help!” Well that’s what happened to Pit’s son(he was there with his two kids and gorgeous, super model wife who’s hair was perfectly straightened and in place in spite of the 100% humidity and 98degree heat). Pit bull was so grateful he came over to thank her and took a really sweet picture hugging her. She was giddy. Her 2 yr. old son (my super cute nephew) played with Pit’s kids that afternoon, yup, that’s the way this Cuban family rolls. ;-) Now regarding the perfume question, the first perfume I ever tried was my mom’s signature scent, Shalimar by Guerlin. I was about 7 or 8 yrs. old and the bottle appeared so magical sitting like royalty on her dresser. My mom has been in heaven for over 20 yrs now and I still get goose bumps and teary eyed when I smell that beautiul scent…

  • Claudia R. says:

The first perfume I ever wore was Love’s Baby Soft. When I see it now I have to take a sniff so I can revisit my 7th grade memories!

I listen to Pitbull every day in the car. Yes, really. I have the Rebelution cd and I’m surprised it’s not worn out. I love his music- the beats, his lyrical geniusness, his stories. And HIM!!! Yum!!
I also listen to Luis Miguel, Billy Joel, and 80′s glam rock. Eclectic I know!

  • Adanary says:

LOL! The word ‘Bombshell’ will never be the same! Congratulations what a great moment to be up-close with Pitbull! I, just last week, discovered your blog through La Cocina de Nathan. I am Mexican in love with a Cuban. He was my high-school boyfriend, we broke up for silly reasons, and to make a long story short I married, had three awesome kids, got divorced and then….17 yrs later…God put him in my life and we are perfect together, for three wonderful years now. I love my heritage and embrace his culture as well. I love cooking for him and his family, and to add variety to my repertoire of great dishes I have learned to cook Cuban food too! I have Cuban certificate of approval ;)on my cuban sandwiches, arroz con pollo, my potaca, and especially my arroz con leche that “Gerald” promises tastes like his grandmother came down from heaven to make through me! That is a major compliment. I imagine Cuban Moms would love to see their children marry Cuban but in this family I feel like they hardly feel a difference, I fit right in.
So I am happy to have found your blog and you are doing a great job!!
As for the drawing, I remember getting a bottle of Liz Claiborne when I was 17, that was my first perfume. I love all music, it’s incredible I know, but right now my ONLY music is Pitbull’s BonBon it is HOT! Cheers!

  • Ody Fabregas says:

You are the bomb.com girl!!!! SO excited for you!
    Beso, Ody

  • Marcela says:

    Martha…I LOVE you!
Marcela´s last [fabulousness] ..My fifth grader

  • Annie says:

Ay yay yay, Pitbull! I do love it when they play his song during Zumba class, but that’s not important right now. ;)

Aside from Augustin Reyes and Violetas, the first perfume I ever remember wearing is Jean Nate. Is that you spell it? Living in a typical Cuban household in New Jersey, we always had a bottle of it sitting in the bathroom. *Always*. My mami taught me to use it after bath. So I did.

Later, when I turned 15, I received my first bottle of Halston Loved that too. (But I realize now that it stains your clothing). These days, I am in love with the Jo Malone line (my favorites are Gardenia and the Lavender & Amber).

But when I get Patrick ready in the morning, and he asks me for “baby cologne”, I always add an extra dab of Augustin Reyes on myself. Just for memories. :)

And music? Ay Dios – what do I not like? I like it all – I just loaded up the iPop with Gloria Estefan, Garth Brooks, Bob Marley, Sting, The Rolling Stones. I don’t discriminate, I love it all!

  • Angela G. says:

1.The first perfume remember ever wearing was my mother’s Chanel Number 5. I actually sprayed it in my eyes…I was standing on tiptoes at the time at Mommy’s vanity, being my usual naughty self, and accidentally sprayed perfume in my face. What a scene! I can even remember how it tasted to this day! Luckily, I wasn’t traumatized for life because I thoroughly enjoy wearing perfume today.

    2. I listen mostly to classic rock, and some pop. I love using Pandora radio on my iphone, and lately have been listening to the Talking Heads channel in my kitchen while I’m cooking dinner (I also like the Michael Buble channel as well as the Glee/Showtunes channel).

  • Michele Caridad says:

Marta…you crack me up! We are very honored that you would represent Latina’s everywhere at the VS show with all the other no-so-important people! :)

ummm…as far as the answers…i want to say….

1st perfume: Shalimar de Guerlain (only because i don’t think Voiletas is technically a perfume…more of like a ritual)

Music: Salsa or some form of it…(although lately thanks to my daughter i am FORCED to listen to a lot more Disney Music/Hannah Montana…:( )

Loved the post… keep ‘em coming!

  • Michelle Simons says:

Holy wow! Pitbull? I’m a older woman here and I think he is sexy big time. There’s something about the guy.
Perfume? My first one I ever tryed was from Avon. I cannot remember the name for nothing. I’m talking the 1970s here. :) feeling old….
Music? I kind of get into Cajun music.

OMG, Marti, this story is surreal! You are the bombshell, mi amiga!

I will tell you the first fragance I will always remember wearing is the classic Agua de Violetas. My maternal grandmother used to stock up bottles for my counsins and I, all four girls…

Music: salsa and traditional Cuban music, as you may have expected.

I gotta tell you also that although I am not a fan of rap, there is one exception to that rule. And his name is Pitbull. I still cry that I missed his concert in Denver last year!; but totally love his rhythms at Zumba!

BTW, my favorite perfume ever is also from VS: “Basic Instic”. Too bad I think they are discontinuing it :-(

  • Yoly says:

Martica – “DALE QUE TU PUEDE!”

Pitbull esta igual como un Flan de Queso…….RIQUISIMO!

My first cologne: Por supuesto, Violetas Francesas.

My favorite type of music: OH MY…Too Many… Pero here’s an example: Freestyle, Salsa, Merengue, Trance, Pop, Hip Hop. Erasure-PSB-DepecheMode-TheSmiths-NewOrder-type of music. And even though she’s not a type of music…MADONNA (fan since ’83)!

The first perfume I ever wore is K by Krizia. I wore it since I was 16 until a few years ago, when Alan convinced me to change scents, because my ph was killing the perfume. I have not used the same perfume twice since the switch, and I miss my K.

The first perfume I ever wore was Jardins de Bagatelle by Guerlain because all the women in my Mom’s family wear Guerlain. She wears Mitsouko, my Abuelita wore Shalimar, mi tia wears L’Heure Bleue… However, I didn’t really like it :( I then went on to wear Jessica McClintock for years – I still do on and off but I supplement it with DKNY Green Apple and L’Eau D’Issey. LOVE LOVE LOVE the Pitbull story!! Y que guapeton – I had no idea he was that yummy :)

  • Tia Mirtha says:

Oh, Martica, you are too funny. You put a smile on my face.

My first perfume… Can’t remember, too long ago. I remember “Private Collection” by Estee Lauder. Oh, there was one perfume call “Worth”.. they don’t make it anymore.

Music: Boleros, Danzones, Merengue, Cha,Cha,Cha.. with that infomation, now you know my age.

    Mirtha- La Tia de Carrie.

  • My very first perfume was called ‘Heaven Scent’, it was a Christmas gift from one of my Tias, not only my first perfume, but my first perfume SET, with the powder, perfume, lotion y todo! I was too pleased with myself and loved using it after every shower!

still have a half of bottle is for memories. I do keep another

Estee Lauder is 23 years old.It makes me happy when I spray a little on special occasions.

And Music my favor is Benny More,Celia Cruz,La Lupe,El Gran Combo,Chirino, Joe Arroyo, Garth Brooks (I just went to see him in
Las Vegas), Alan Jackson and Reba.

Love you and all your wonderful stories.

  • Luly says:

Marta, you guys rock! I’m so happy you and Amy had this awesome moment! Thanks for sharing it with us. And under normal circumstances, I would say that it’s better to be chasing a pitbull than be chased by one, but in this case, I’m not so sure! ;-)

I’m a perfume maniac and I can humbly say that I have a perfume collection that rivals the perfume counter at Sak’s, but I simply adore fragrance and I collect bottles, too. Being a Cuban baby, my first perfume was Royal Violets by Agustin Reyes and as a little girl, I used to get perfumes by Avon. They had these adorable little plastic dolls that had perfume inside of them and bubble bath, too. I loved them. I guess they were the predecessors to today’s Harajuku Lovers dolls which my daughter now collects.

As far as music, I was raised in a very Cuban musical household and studied piano for 10 years so anything goes, but today I mainly listen to classic rock, 80′s, boleros, R&B and jazz.

“What was the very first perfume you remember wearing?”
Easy! Violetas, of course! Like a good Cuban baby should! =)

“What type of music do you most often listen to?”
This one is not as easy. I listen to Top 40, which as you know, typically involves many different kinds of music:
A little bit of Country, such as the lovely Miss Taylor Swift
A little Dance a la Lady Gaga, who’s music I like but whose fashion is too much for my taste.
And of course, being in Miami, a nice hefty dose of Hip Hop, oncluding none other than Mr. Armando Perez (aka Pitbull).
Bueno, y la Salsa no puede faltar, of course! =)

  • Bonni says:

What was the very first perfume you remember wearing?

This is a relatively easy question for me to answer, as my first perfume experience was last year, as a 29-year-old newlywed.

Growing up, I lived with a mother who had allergies to just about every flavor and aroma under the sun. If I wanted to paint my nails, I’d have to leave the house until well after the paint was dry. Hairspray was a no-no. Perfume, noooo waaaay! Even deodorant was tricky — I’d have to step out the exterior bathroom door onto our porch, apply deodorant outside, and wave my arms around before coming back in. Needless to say, it was awkward when my friends came over to spend the night and I had to explain these “rules” to them.

So when I became an adult, it never really occurred to me to stop in the fragrance counters of stores, or go looking for a signature scent.

Then last year, my husband dragged me into Macy’s and over to the fragrance section, where he introduced me to perfumes and colognes for, really, the first time. What an experience! I found myself looking over my shoulder a lot, as if I was doing something scandalous. Hah!

I haven’t made the plunge and actually bought it yet, but I am a big fan of Bvlgari’s Omnia Green Jade and their Aqva fragrances. My favorite fragrance, however? Bvlgari Eau Parfumee au Blanc. Mmmm. The Ritz-Carlton scent. Mmmm.

    The end!

  • L’Air du Temps by Nina Ricci, for the bottle as much as for the scent. And since the name was French I thought it was incredibly sophisticated for a first perfume. I wore perfume more regularly as a teenager than I do now — maybe time to get back into the habit! Music–everything.

How funny that I came across this blog. This past week I met Pitbull as well for his exclusive birthday party in the beautiful city of MIAMI !!!! Hes a wonderful person and so down to earth. But enough about Pitbull and lets get straight to the question.

What type of music do you most often listen to?

Well being that I am from Miami the second capital of Cuba( LOL) I was raised listening to Latin music but mostly SALSA !!! I enjoy listening to everything and anything but what keeps me going is Salsa. Its kinda like an addiction..I live, breath, and if I could I would eat Salsa. Listening to it and ofcourse dancing it is an escape of all escapes.
